Baby blue and a pretty lady bug...

Only recently did I start capturing Maternity photos. I never really took appointments for these photo shoots. I guess I didn't want to become the "baby photographer" as they used to say when I worked in the studio. But the reality is, maternity photos are just another avenue for creativity in photography. Just like any other subject in photography. All the rules apply. And all the rules can be broken.

So I've learned that with Maternity photos, I can continue experimenting, learning, and developing my style. And the byproduct is hopefully maternity photos that are just a bit different in lighting, composition, and creativity. I can experiment with depth of field, different lighting techniques, and compositions. It's my favorite thing to do.
The subject matter is another means to do all the things above. I do think Maternity photos are often misunderstood, and underrated by photographers. I know. I was one of them. But I've learned, just like weddings, it's a wonderful way to capture the human emotion. And the beauty of birth.

Here's a preview of a session I did today with Jason and Janelle. We chased the light from the Santa Monica Mountains to Zuma Beach in Malibu. We saw lady bugs and seagulls and the sunset ended up being marvelous....it was only fitting. -cg

Green hills, love,...and a dog!

The rain in SoCal this winter, the much needed rain, has brought the hills and mountains to life. The Santa Monica Mountains are absolutely beautiful right now. Covered in a beautiful green coat of grass, they have been my favorite location for photo sessions lately.
This evening I captured images at a tree on one of those hills that I've always wanted to capture and incorporate into a session. Mission accomplished.

This engagement session was so fun!
